Virtual Human is a labor of love dedicated to making all diseases preventable, alleviating untold human misery and suffering. The goal of the virtual human is to look and behave as close to the real thing as possible. It consists of both 3D anatomical models and mathematical physiology models.
For the anatomical model we have acquired a 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) model of a real person - arteries, veins, organs, skin, bones, muscles, etc. It exists in animation software that can be used to zoom in or out on selected components or use the integrated gaming engine to animate simulated molecular or cellular interactions.
A sophisticated physiology model is being developed that simulates healthy and pathological human conditions. With each iteration of software and hardware advances it becomes more accurate and powerful. In the not-to-distant future you should be able to see conditions develop (cancers, MS, arthritis, Alzheimer's, etc) and see associated symptoms (pain, fatigue, fever, inflammation, etc) manifest themselves in the model. Once conditions are accurately simulated, it could be used as a prediction/prevention tool using biomarkers found in blood, saliva, breath, urine, or stool from a real human.
In the Fall of 2015 the Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE and Nokia Sensing Challenge will be awarded which will usher in a new era of personalized healthcare. The ensuing flood of cheap, automated bio-data will generate enormous databases which will be mined to create unimaginably powerful tools for discovery. Those discoveries will be added to the Virtual Human. With enough integrated information, a person will be able to get regular "checkups", maybe by simply breathing into his smartphone! It will then give him a clean bill of health, or warn him of a need to make adjustments to diet or other interventions to head off impending adverse conditions.
